Mobile Experts: 200,000 nodes installed in U.S. last year
The United States represents about 19% of the indoor DAS business, with more than 200,000 DAS nodes installed last year, according to Joe Madden, principal analyst at Mobile Experts. The company just released a forecast that estimates global shipments of indoor Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) to reach 2.5 million nodes by 2017. The U.S. represents about 90% of the outdoor DAS market in terms of units shipped, Madden said. While deployments today take place around large venues, like airports, stadiums and tunnels, future growth will occur in vertical markets like hospitality, healthcare, universities and commercial real-estate buildings. People are looking for wireless coverage in both their homes and where they work, Madden said, so he expects about 20% of DAS installations to take place in residential high-rise and office buildings going forward. "The DAS market will roughly double in size over the next five years, with a dramatic increase in the combination of DAS with Wi-Fi, public safety radio and LTE networks. In addition, when high-capacity small cells such as picocells are more widely available, we can expect small cells to replace macrocells as the primary signal source for indoor DAS systems," Madden added.
